Refresh your home before the holidays

A simple guide from a painter who works with care and respect for your home

This time of year, a lot of people in Dublin like to give their home a small refresh. Nothing big, nothing stressful — just a cleaner feel, warmer colours and that sense of “right, the place looks good and we’re ready for visitors”.

I’m Dan, a painter based here in Dublin, and I spend most days in the homes of people who genuinely care about their space. I enjoy working with clients who look after their house, because it gives me the same motivation to take my time, prep things properly and finish everything the way it should be done.

Below are a few practical ideas — the kind of things that actually matter if you want to make a change before the holidays, without the mess, without surprises and without turning your home upside down.

Colours that work well in Irish homes this season

You don’t need to follow trends, but I’ve noticed a few colours that sit really nicely in Dublin homes — especially during the winter months:

• Warm, natural neutrals

Soft greys, warm beiges, off-whites — colours that calm the space.
With our darker days here, these tones add light and comfort.

• Deep greens and petrol blues

Great for sitting rooms, hallways or woodwork.
They add depth without being too heavy.

• Colour drenching (one colour across everything)

This is something more designers are using lately — walls, ceiling and woodwork in the same tone.
It gives a clean, modern look and works especially well in older Dublin homes.

You don’t need to repaint the whole house.
Sometimes one room is enough to bring a fresh atmosphere for the season.

What to check before starting (the things clients appreciate most)

Most people only see the final coat.
But the truth — and I say this as someone who does this every day — is simple:
preparation is where the real magic happens.

Here’s what I look at before I lift a roller:

• Fresh plaster needs to be sealed properly

If not, paint dries unevenly and you get dull patches.

• New wood needs proper filling, sanding and a good primer

Raw timber moves and absorbs differently.
If we prep it right now, it will repaint easily in a few years.

• Older woodwork shouldn’t just get “another coat”

If we don’t level and clean it, all the bumps and dents show through immediately.

• Ceilings make the biggest difference before the holidays

A clean ceiling changes the feel of a room instantly.
You notice it more than you’d think — especially with Christmas lights on.

I often tell clients:
“If we’re going to do it, let’s do it properly — so you don’t have to fix anything in a month.”
People who care about their homes appreciate that honesty.

How I work with you (simple, calm and straightforward)

  • This is the way I approach every job — no big promises, no rush, no shortcuts:

    • I visit, I look around, and I make a clear plan

    Every house is different.
I prefer seeing things in person so I can be honest about what needs doing and what doesn’t.

    • I explain everything in plain English

    No jargon, no confusion.
You’ll always know exactly what’s being done.

    • I work cleanly and with respect for your home

Dust sheets, tidy tools, no mess left behind.
I always remind myself of one thing:
    “I’m not just painting a wall — I’m working inside someone’s home.”

    • Proper preparation first, painting after

Painting is only about 20% of the job.
The prep is what gives you that clean, long-lasting finish.

    • We set a timeline and I stick to it

No disappearing acts, no delays without explanation.
If something changes, you hear it from me directly.

If you’re thinking about doing something before the holidays…

Now is the best time to plan it.
Not because everything has to be perfect — but because it’s a great feeling to come home, switch on the lights and see everything looking fresh, bright and cared for.

If you’d like to do a small refresh — one room, a bit of woodwork, or a full interior — I’m here.
